The CPU usage percentages are not an entirely accurate when it comes to how much processing power your applications use. There are a few misconceptions about how processors and their cores work, especially among novice users, but ThreadRacer can clear everything up. This simple utility can give you more accurate numbers when it comes to a CPU's performance. It is capable of running normal-priority threads on individual cores, but it can also run a single thread on multiple cores.

ThreadRacer comes as a single executable, which you can download and run straight away. It works on all modern Windows systems and it supports both 32 and 64-bit versions. The software doesn't have any special requirements, but it will put a bit of a strain on your hardware, since that is what it's designed for.

The application has a simple user interface, with a series of bars, which represent your current CPU usage percentage, for each core. You can start running one or more threads, by simply clicking a series of check boxes, for each processor core. Once you've made your selection, you only need to click a button to start the threads and you will see the bars filling up for the selected threads.

ThreadRacer is capable of running up to eight threads, one for each core. During the test, you will see the iteration count for each thread. Alternatively, you can run a single thread for all cores. What's more, the application lets you tweak the CPU affinity of the test, by specifying which cores to use for that single thread, on a separate window.

The software's appearance and functionality are quite simple, even for novice users. However, the information it provides is more accurate than any basic CPU usage monitor, so you can get a good idea on how well your processor can perform.

If you wan to see what your processor is capable of, with a good degree of accuracy, then you should definitely have a look at ThreadRacer.

Pros

The application is capable of running separate threads for each processor core. It can also run a single thread for all cores. Additionally, it lets you choose which processors to use for that single thread.

Cons

There are no obvious issues to address.
